Major Pink Floyd release campaign, "Why Pink Floyd?"

Pink Floyd and EMI Music, whose association dates from 1967, announce a comprehensive release schedule, to be launched on September 26, 2011, encompassing CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, SACD, an array of digital formats, viral marketing, iPhone Apps, and a brand-new single-album "Best Of" collection.

The legendary band, who are still one of the most successful and iconic artists of all time, recently signed an agreement with EMI which has allowed the development of a multi-format programme of packages, many containing archive material that has been collated during an extensive process between EMI and Pink Floyd for a range of media formats.

The releases, under the banner Why Pink Floyd?, are designed to appeal to a wide cross section of their fans, with music to excite first time listeners, while super-deluxe box sets will cater to dedicated fans, allowing them to immerse themselves in multi-disc sets, containing alternate takes, unreleased tracks, restored live concert screen films and a live recording of the legendary The Dark Side Of The Moon performance at Wembley in 1974.

A series of different listening experiences have been specially created for this release: in addition to remastered CDs called 'Discovery' and the 'Immersion' CD/DVD/Blu-ray memorabilia box sets will be a series of 'Experience' Editions – coupling one classic album with a further disc of related content from that album to offer a deeper listening experience.

Roger Faxon, CEO of EMI Group, said: "This is a unique collaboration between EMI and one of the most creative and influential bands in history. We have worked together for more than a year on this programme which incorporates all the elements that have made Pink Floyd one of the most inspiring forces in modern music. Why Pink Floyd? Because their music is without equal and these exciting new releases will allow music fans to rediscover their incredible legacy and demonstrate that an appreciation for artistic quality never goes out of fashion".

Storm Thorgerson, the band's longtime Art Director, has overseen the visual design, including new booklets for all the CDs, new artwork for the box sets and men us for the DVD content. Respected photographer Jill Furmanovsky, has edited books of original unseen photographs. Pink Floyd collaborators James Guthrie (in the US) and Andy Jackson (in the UK) have been in charge of digital remastering to the highest audio and audiovisual standards.

Pink Floyd film archivist Lana Topham has supervised the painstaking restoration of many historic films from Pink Floyd's classic era, included in the 'Immersion' box sets for 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' and 'Wish You Were Here'.

First to be available on 26 September 2011 will be:
Expanded deluxe and special edition versions of Pink Floyd masterwork The Dark Side Of The Moon, in a 6-disc 'Immersion' box set and 'Experience' 2-disc versions, as well as a collectors' Vinyl LP and various digital formats. Plus 14 studio albums, digitally remastered will be available separately or as a box set.
Other initiatives will include a digital marketing plan utilising user-generated content to allow fans to make their own creative contributions to the band's music, plus iPhone Apps which will give a unique insight into Pink Floyd's recorded legacy.

On 7 November 2011, Phase 2 of the releases will include:
Wish You Were Here 'Immersion' 5-disc and 'Experience' 2-disc editions, both of which will include bonus material from the band's 1974 Wembley dates, including a 20-minute tour de force live rendition of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', as well as a unique recording of 'Wish You Were Here' featuring the legendary jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli. A collectors' Vinyl LP will also be available, as will various digital formats.
Released simultaneously will be A Foot In The Door – The Best Of Pink Floyd, a collection of their most well-known songs, contained on one album for the first time.
The long-awaited 5.1 version of 'Wish You Were Here', mixed by James Guthrie, will also be released in parallel via independent label Acoustic Sounds.

The Wall, which has sold 25-million double sets and has become a cultural and political touchstone over the last three decades, will be afforded the same exhaustive treatment on February 27, 2012, with deluxe packages including a 7-disc 'Immersion' set and a 3-disc 'Experience' edition. A collectors' Vinyl LP will also be available, as will various digital formats.

End of the Why Pink Floyd Campaign

MMXIII / 2013

EMI has officially ceased to be ....

"Warner Bros. purchases Parlophone Records from Universal" by Mark Rozeman

According to a report by Britain’s Financial Times and confirmation later coming from Billboard, Warner Music has just won the auction for several former EMI labels. Most notable on the list is Parlophone, the home to such artists as Coldplay, David Guetta and Daft Punk as well as such legendary past acts as Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Jethro Tull.

Warner purchased the company from Universal Music for a reported £487 million (roughly, $765 million in U.S. currency). The auction comes as the result of a disposal process pushed by European regulators. The bid put forth by Warner will allow Universal Music to recoup almost half the money spent on its £1.2 billion dollar acquisition of EMI’s recorded music division.

Warner’s offer was more than $100 million ahead of other bidders. However, according to the article, Warner’s victory still surprised some industry insiders who perceived the company’s “vocal lobbying against Universal’s EMI deal” as an obstacle.“We’re satisfied that our agreement with Warner Music will provide a home for [Parlophone label group] artists,” Universal’s chairman and chief executive Lucian Grainge is quoted as saying in the article. Billboard editor Bill Werde tweeted about the purchase, stating that the deal should be settled by mid-2013.

Pink Floyd
is releasing a 20th anniversary box set of The Division Bell, the band's 1994 multi-million selling album that included the Grammy Award winning track Marooned. Set for release on 30 June 2014, 'The Division Bell' was the last studio album to be released by the band: David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. This 20th anniversary box set features six discs, including three replica coloured or clear vinyl discs, 5 collectors' prints, a Blu-ray disc and for the first time Andy Jackson's 5.1 audio mix of 'The Division Bell'.

'The Division Bell' debuted at No 1 in the UK and in the USA, staying at the top of the US charts for 4 weeks; it also went to No 1 in eight other countries and, to date, has reached total album sales of over 12 million. The album was recorded by the band at Astoria and Britannia Row Studios with the majority of the lyrics being written by Polly Samson and David Gilmour.

David Gilmour said at the time: "The three of us went into Britannia Row studios, and improvised for 2 weeks. Playing together and starting from scratch was interesting and exciting, it kick started the album and the process was very good, it was collaborative and felt more cohesive".

The Division Bell 20th Anniversary collector's box set will feature a new 2-LP vinyl edition of the album, remastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab from the original analogue tapes, including all the full length tracks (originally edited to fit on a single LP) in a gatefold sleeve designed by Hipgnosis/StormStudios. Five other discs are included: a red 7" vinyl replica of single Take It Back, clear 7" vinyl replica of High Hopes, 12" blue vinyl replica of High Hopes with reverse laser etched design, the 2011 Discovery remaster of 'The Division Bell' and a Blu-ray disc including 'The Division Bell' album in HD Audio, plus the previously unreleased 5.1 surround sound audio mix of the album by Andy Jackson.

Another addition included on the Blu-ray disc is a new video for Marooned, the track that won a Grammy for 'Best Rock Instrumental' in 1994. Filmed in Ukraine during the first week of April 2014, the video was directed by Aubrey Powell at Hipgnosis. It will appear on the disc with audio tracks in both PCM Stereo and a 5.1 mix by Andy Jackson.

Bob Ezrin and David Gilmour produced the original album, with orchestral arrangements by the late Michael Kamen. The anniversary box set discs have been remastered by long term Pink Floyd audio associates James Guthrie and Joel Plante.

The album was co-produced by David and Phil Manzanera, the primary lyricist for the album is Polly who has been David's long-term writing partner, contributing lyrics since 1994's The Division Bell. There is also a credit on the album for MichaëlBoumendil, who created the simple four-note jingle used by French rail operator SNCF for platform announcements. The jingle inspired David to write the music for the title track, which is paired with Polly's lyrics, themselves inspired by Book Two of John Milton's Paradise Lost.

PINK FLOYD VINYL RELEASES CONTINUE WITH 'ANIMALS'

The LP reissue programme on Pink Floyd Records continues with the release on November 18th of Animals, the first time it has been issued in over 20 years. After over eight months of continuous recording at their own Britannia Row studios in 1976, Animals was originally released in 1977 and became one of the band's most popular albums. The album cover, featuring 'Algie' the pig floating above London's Battersea Power Station, is amongst Pink Floyd's most recognisable covers, while Algie was most recently sighting above London's V&A Museum to launch The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains.

Animals joins the first seven Pink Floyd albums (The Piper at The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucerful Of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, and Obscured By Clouds) in having been remastered in 2016 from the original master tapes and pressed in heavyweight 180 gram vinyl, with packaging based closely on the original LP sleeves.

In addition, The Wall and The Division Bell LP remasters are both available now, Wish You Were Here will be available on October 14th, and The Dark Side of the Moon on November 4th.

On
Friday 20th January 2017, Pink Floyd Records will complete the reintroduction of the Pink Floyd studio albums on vinyl with The Final Cut and A Momentary Lapse of Reason remastered and reissued. These albums have not been available on vinyl for well over two decades.

Over the past year, Pink Floyd Records has released the entire studio collection as stereo remastered versions on heavyweight 180g vinyl. All are mastered from the original analogue studio tapes with album artwork faithfully reproduced.

Released originally in 1983, The Final Cut was another global chart-topper for Pink Floyd. During the Falklands War and the era of Thatcherism, this anti-war concept album explored the themes of fallen servicemen, the loss of loved ones and political betrayal.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason, Pink Floyd's thirteenth studio album, was released in 1987 and demonstrated a significant change in style for the band with more experimental use of drum machines and samples. The album also saw the return of graphic artist Storm Thorgerson who designed this now iconic cover.

Also included is unreleased material and remixes from Pink Floyd's original soundtrack compositions for the films More, Zabriskie Point, and La Valle (Obscured By Clouds).

Each package (CAMBRIDGE ST/ATION, GERMIN/ATION, DRAMATIS/ATION, DEVI/ATION, REVERBER/ATION, OBFUSC/ATION) has been entitled up by Roger Waters to give an insight into where the band were at that particular point in their career.

The Early Years: Individual Volumes give fans the opportunity to hear the evolution of the band. From the earliest 1965 recordings, through their first single Arnold Layne all the way to the 20-minute Echoes, this is an insightful collection that explores the Pink Floyd story from the time Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Nick Mason and Syd Barrett met at London's Regent Street Polytechnic through to Syd's departure and David Gilmour joining to form the iconic lineup.

For fans wishing to immerse themselves in the full Pink Floyd story, the complete box set The Early Years: 1965-1972 collates all of the individual volumes plus extra discs, collectables and memorabilia exclusive to the box set. In addition to the individual volumes and the deluxe set, a 2-CD highlights album The Early Years – CRE/ATION is also available.

VINYL REISSUES CONTINUE WITH 'A COLLECTION OF GREAT DANCE SONGS' AND 'DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER'

The reissues of Pink Floyd recordings on vinyl continue on Friday 17th November, when Pink Floyd Records will reissue A Collection Of Great Dance Songs and Delicate Sound Of Thunder on vinyl, the first time they have been available on the format in over twenty years.

Originally released in 1981, A Collection Of Great Dance Songs contains alternative mixes and versions of the band's classics including Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2), and Money. The compilation album was certified Double Platinum by the RIAA in 2001, for more than two million sales in the USA alone. Delicate Sound Of Thunder was recorded live over five nights in August 1988 at the Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, NY, and became infamous for being the first rock album to be played in outer space.

As with the rest of the Pink Floyd studio collection released over the past two years, these albums are stereo versions on heavyweight 180g vinyl, mastered from the original studio tapes with album artwork faithfully reproduced.

For Record Store Day 2018 (Saturday 21st April), Pink Floyd will release the band's debut album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn on vinyl, with a new mono 2018 remaster by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman. Remastered from the original 1967 mono mix, the limited quantity release is delivered on premium 12" 180-gram black vinyl, and comes paired with a 540 x 388mm poster on art paper, as well as a foil blocked outer wallet.

To differentiate the mono version for buyers, Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis, with Peter Curzon, has created some additional packaging in the form of a card envelope which features a psychedelic design, including a gold embossed version of the graphic by Syd Barrett which also features on the reverse of the original mono LP. The package also includes gold and black labels, a gold sticker, and a poster featuring the original photograph (taken by the late Colin Prime in Ruskin Park, South London) that inspired Syd's graphic.

The actual album sleeve is, as usual, a close recreation of the original sleeve design, but with all details listing its 'mono' status.

Today sees the re-release of two Pink Floyd albums on vinyl: the 1995 UK Number 1 live album
PULSE, and the classic compilation RELICS both pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl.

PULSE, originally released in 1995, was compiled by James Guthrie, using various performances from the band's 1994 Division Bell tour across the UK and Europe featuring David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. The album includes The Dark Side of the Moon performed in full live, as well as a whole side dedicated to the show's encore.

The 4-LP set includes four different inner sleeves, each inside individual outer sleeves, plus a 52-page hardback photo book, all encased in a thick card slipcase. One of These Days was included in the LP and cassette version of the album as an additional track.

This 2018 release was remastered from the original tapes by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman. Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis and Peter Curzon, who worked on the original art with the late Hipgnosis co-founder, Storm Thorgerson, recreated the art package.

The 1971 compilation album RELICS has been remastered in 2018 by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman, and comes almost 50 years since the original pressing. As Pink Floyd's first 'compilation' album, it includes singles, B-sides and tracks from their first three albums The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets, and More. It also includes the then-previously unreleased Roger Waters song, Biding My Time, recorded in July 1969 and first released on Relics in May 1971.
Keeping true to the original artwork, the sleeve features the black and white drawings by Nick Mason, carrying the subtitle 'A Bizarre Collection of Antiques & Curios'. All tracks are the original stereo versions, which sit alongside the Syd Barrett-era, mono mixed singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play.

On Friday 28th September 2018, Pink Floyd Records will release, for the first time on vinyl, A Foot In The Door – The Best Of Pink Floyd, a collection of classic Pink Floyd tracks, chosen by members of the band.

Originally released in 2011 on CD only, the artwork for this compilation is the last Pink Floyd album work of long-term Floyd designer, the late Storm Thorgerson. This is the perfect Pink Floyd album for both devoted fans and those discovering their music for the very first time.
The career-spanning compilation features some of the best-known album tracks from 1967 – 1994, including the band's first UK Top 10 single See Emily Play, and the iconic Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and High Hopes.
The tracks have been newly mastered for vinyl by longstanding Pink Floyd associate James Guthrie, with Joel Plante, and with lacquers cut by Bernie Grundman of Grundman Mastering in Los Angeles, California. The 2-LP version features the reinstated version of Time, with the ringing alarm clocks at the start of the track restored, after being omitted on the CD release.

The original sleeve design, has been amended by Pink Floyd Creative Director Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis and Peter Curzon, to include alternate versions of the photographs used in the original CD version.
The album package comes in a gatefold outer sleeve, with two separate printed inner bags, and is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl.

To celebrate
Record Store Day 2019 (Saturday 13th April), Pink Floyd will re-release the band's second album A Saucerful of Secrets on vinyl. Remastered by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman from the original 1968 analogue mono mix, the release is the latest from Pink Floyd Records, which has supported Record Store Day since the label's launch in June 2016.

The limited-edition Record Store Day release is delivered on premium 12" 180-gram black vinyl, with a black poly-lined inner sleeve, and a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve, including the 'Columbia' logo, under which imprint (via EMI) the early Pink Floyd released in the UK. (The 'Columbia' logo has been used by kind permission of owners Sony Music Entertainment.)
The album's cover artwork was the first ever sleeve design for creators Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson of the Hipgnosis design team, and was to lead to a groundbreaking career for them in the visual arts, including of course many more iconic Pink Floyd album sleeves, amongst them The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

A Saucerful of Secrets in Mono follows the successful release of Pink Floyd's debut album The Piper At The Gates of Dawn in Mono in 2018, and is released via Record Store Day participating stores on Saturday 13th April 2019.

Pink Floyd Records is releasing a 25th anniversary edition of The Division Bell, the band's 1994 multi-million selling album that included the Grammy Award-winning track Marooned (Best Rock Instrumental Performance). Set for release on Friday 7th June, this 25th anniversary edition will be available on translucent blue vinyl, echoing the original limited blue vinyl release in 1994.

The Division Bell sleeve artwork of two huge metal heads in profile talking to each other (and in turn, creating a third forward-facing head) was provided by long-time Floyd collaborator Storm Thorgerson. Two three-metre tall metal head sculptures (by John Robertson), weighing 1500 kilogrammes, were placed in a field in Cambridgeshire and photographed across a two-week period in all weather conditions. Storm said: "It was intended that the viewer should not see both at the same time. One saw the single face, or the two profiles which meant that they were then communicating with the image". This relates directly to the album's core themes of communication, talking through problems and making choices.

The album was remastered for the release in 2014 by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab from the original analogue tapes. Bob Ezrin and David Gilmour produced the original album, with orchestral arrangements by the late Michael Kamen. As with the 2014 vinyl reissue, it's a 2-LP set containing all full-length versions of the tracks, as opposed to the original 1994 LP, which featured some edited tracks in order to fit the album on one LP.

PINK FLOYD THE LATER YEARS
BOX : Parlophone PFRLY01 / 0190295413132

On Friday 29th November 2019, Pink Floyd Records releases Pink Floyd The Later Years, a 16-disc set (5 x CDs, 6 x Blu-Rays, 5 x DVDs) covering the material created by David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright from 1987 onwards. The period included three studio albums: A Momentary Lapse Of Reason; The Division Bell; and The Endless River; as well as two live albums: Delicate Sound Of Thunder; and Pulse. With additional production from David Gilmour and Andy Jackson, over 13 hours of unreleased audio and audiovisual material, including the sought-after 1989 Venice and 1990 Knebworth concerts, Pink Floyd The Later Years is a must for all fans.

A multi-media, deluxe box set, Pink Floyd The Later Years presents an expanded view of the Pink Floyd story from 1987 to the present and kicks off with A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, the album that confirmed Pink Floyd as one of the world's biggest artists.

The album, presented for the first time in 5.1, has been updated and remixed by David Gilmour and Andy Jackson. The release of The Later Years project gives an opportunity for a fresh overview of the A Momentary Lapse Of Reason album. By returning to some of Richard Wright's keyboard parts and recording new drum tracks with Nick Mason, producers David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin have restored the creative balance between the three Pink Floyd members.

Highlights of Pink Floyd The Later Years include:
Restored and remixed Delicate Sound Of Thunder on Blu-ray, DVD and 2-CD;
Restored and re-edited Pulse on Blu-ray for the first time;
Previously unreleased Venice concert (Blu-ray & DVD) and Knebworth concert (remixed/re-edited on Blu-ray/DVD/CD);
Unseen documentaries, screen films, promo clips and the previously unreleased Endless River film.

With the help of Nick Mason and the Pink Floyd archive, the box set comes with reproductions of tour artwork, posters, programmes, tour laminates, lyric book and much more, including two 7" vinyl singles, (the live version of Arnold Layne performed at the Syd Barrett Tribute Concert in 2007 and Lost For Words from the 'Pulse' tour rehearsals at Earl's Court), in new picture sleeves and etched image B-sides. Also included is a brand new 60-page hardback book of photos, designed by Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis and Peter Curzon of StormStudios, including many previously unseen images.
